College FAQ: Location and Determination

1. Should I pick a college for a location over what the college can offer me?

  • Depending on what kind of experience you want from college, location can be a deciding factor in which one you pick. If you want a purely academic experience, then location wouldn't matter to you; however, if you can't afford to move or you prefer to live in a more urban area over rural ones, then location really could matter.
2. If what I'm passionate about doesn't give job security, should I pick it as a major?
  • If you care enough about a hobby or a sport that you want to make a career out of it, and you have the determination to make your dreams come true, then you might as well make your college experience as enjoyable as you can. Don't fall into a major that you don't enjoy just because the jobs that come from it make a lot of money. If you already enjoy what you do, then in theory you wouldn't need the money to do it; you're already being paid for it.

  1. These are great questions. I think if you get a full-ride or something like that then location would not really matter to me, because I would get an education for free. Also, if you love something you are passionate about, I agree the money would not matter as much.

  2. Although many of look toward the financial security as comfort and in some cases a necessity for our future it may not be for others. I think that we should love what we do and not just be in it for the money. If you love what you do it won't seem as though its a job that you have to hobble your way out of bed everyday to. It will be an excitement, you'll want to get out of bed and go to your job. Money's not everything. Enjoy life, don't just endure it.

  3. I believe that if your passionate enough about something then you should major in it, even if it doesn't provide much security. You want to have a career that you are actually interested in and want to be apart of. Although you should take precautions and take a minor in something else that you might be interested and that provides a little more financial stability in as a back up plan.

  4. I love how both of your questions kinda fall under the category of "do what you feel, be who you are and who you want to be" because that's so important to remember going into this next rocky unfamiliar period in our lives. These next few years are going to be so pivotal in our growth and understanding of who we are, and beginning to do things for our passion over material things is really important.
