A Neglected Issue: The Politics of the Food We Eat
This New York Times article states how we could save 70% on health care costs, which could add up to trillions of dollars each year, by simply eating better. Unfortunately, our food system is subsidized to promote unhealthy food. It also talks about how animal agriculture is affecting out climate change and causing other environmental problems. However, instead of making sure the factories do what they are suppose to, they are relying on tax payers money to clean up the mess that they have made. In the article is implies that everyday we have the decision of what we want to eat and I think that that is one of the biggest decisions we make on a daily basis. Obviously there are other things to factor in but some people blame fast food places for their unhealthiness when in reality each day you get to chose if you want to have that cheeseburger, salad, and fries or something healthier. Your decision everyday can either make you or slowly break you. On the other hand agriculture also contributes but unfortunately American farm policies have enabled a harmful system to take root. Fortunately as more consumers become aware and concerned with our broken food system they are demanding changes such as organic produce. Not to mention, farmers markets are popping up all over the place now. Hopefully as time continues more and more people will become aware and start to request change as well.
