I chose to write my research paper on poultry farmers and the way they raise their chickens. Contract poultry farmers are farmers that take on contracts with big poultry processing companies such as Tyson, these farmers enter the business usually due to financial problems and a need to make money. These contract farmers are “rewarded” for turning in chicken with the most weight gained using the least amount of feed. On the other hand there are cage free farmers who believe in allowing chickens to take on their natural life course without the use of hormones or any other chemicals that are injected into commercial chickens. Through my research I have discovered that contract poultry farming isn’t an issue that needs to be looked into just for the chickens but also for the farmers who seem to also suffer a different form of abuse. Something I need to continue researching to add to my paper is the benefits of cage free chicken farming and if resorting to this method for all chicken production would affect profits and efficiency within companies. I’d like to have a strong comparison not only between the two methods of chicken farming but also compare their results, how much profit do they bring in? How efficient is each one? Who is benefitted in each method? The fact that farmers need more rights and freedom to practice farming as they see best for themselves and their animals is not a question the true question is how can we get farmers to where they need to be to produce healthy poultry that doesn’t sink them into helpless debt and a guilty conscience.
