My research paper involves the topic of organic food.
The growth of organic food being sold keeps increasing as time goes by. What
has helped the industry grow is that there has been controversy about
conventional foods and how organic is always better; however, as contradicting
it may seem, organic may not always be the best option. I decided to pose the
question if the growth of organic foods market is just for companies to make
business or are they really looking out for their customers and providing
supposed better options to conventional foods.
In my paper, I plan to discuss what organic means and
how labeling can cause people to misinterpret the meaning. The reason I want to
address this in my research paper is because so many people purchase expensive
organic products believing that it is better because it sounds better, but they
might not even know what organic really means. My paper will also include
information about how organic farming effects the environment and the land. The
treatment of animals when it comes to organic farming is also something I am
planning to include. One of the main reasons people choose organic is because
it means better treatment of animals, but I have found information that that
might not always be the case.
So far I’ve been finding good amounts of information
on the things I want to talk about. One of the sub topics I could use more
research on is the growth of the industry. I am having trouble find how much
sales have grown and how many companies have begun to sell organic. Any
suggestions on where I could find it? Do you think I need a source to back it
up even though it might be evident more companies are going organic?
Although it may be obvious, you'd increase your ethos if you backed up the claim with a few sources. I'd suggest the best way to illustrate the significance of the rapid expansion in the organic food industry, that would be in the form of numbers. From Statista, I've linked a statistic (1) on organic food sales in the U.S. from 2005 to 2015. With it, you could compare the spike in millions of dollars in sales. I'll also link the USDA's Organic Market Overview (2) in case you wanted to focus on a specific category of organic food. If neither of these provides to be useful, there's a list and an article from The Washington Post that provides specific examples of organic food brands owned by large food processors you could mention in your paper (3).
