Third Course

My mindset about this country has changed so much after I researched food waste.  I realized how much food we waste every year and how careless we all are!  If we all cared enough to try to save as much food as possible, we would have enough food for everyone that is starving.  Also, after watching Food Inc., I realized how bad our food is for us..  For many farms and companies the only thing that is important is the profit; in other words, people don't produce good, healthy food because it costs more than cheap, unhealthy food.  I don't even feel comfortable eating a burger anymore because I know how the meat is made.

If I could go back 4 years, with this knowledge of the food industry, I would probably try changing the way I eat.  I would not become vegetarian or anything, but I would for sure limit myself from eating so much meat..  Also, back to food waste, I would stop wasting so much food and I would try to inform my family and friends about how much food is being wasted.  Since then, I have stopped wasting a ton of food, and I make sure my family eats all of theirs.

If I were to help change the food industry, I would suggest restaurants to enforce the customers to finish all of their food.  A way that this could happen would be to charge people extra for leaving food on their plates, or to have signs that constantly remind people about how much food is being wasted.  I would also strongly suggest farmers to feed their animals good, healthy food so that our meat isn't so gross.

  1. I agree with you about changing the way I eat if we could go back 4 years in time. I don't think I could ever become a vegetarian but I would definitely change my eating style and would advise the people I knew about what they shouldn't be eating often and about food waste.

  2. I agree with you -- my eating habits is definitely something I would change if I could go back four years with the knowledge I have now. And your proposal for farmers to feed animals better food is a great idea. You'd think that would be common sense but sadly that's not the case. Also I think another way to stop food waste, especially in restaurants, would be to control portion size. With smaller portions, there is less of a chance of food being wasted. America is known for it’s unnecessarily large portions, if we cut down on that I believe that could help with our food waste problem.
