On the edge of the industrial revolution, humans are now consuming food at unprecedented levels with the help of new techniques in farming and food processing. Mass production with cheap ingredients is the keystone of big food corporation, and profit is the name of the game. But while everybody thinks they are saving tons of money and time by purchasing a ready to eat meal in loo of a homemade meal, the real price of it all is paid years later by their bodies and health. In the article, Halkett dives directly into the emerging battle between folks wanting better for the nations health and the money grubbing food industry. The biggest punch the industry can throw is with their deep pockets and government connections. According to the article, since the 90's food industry has been one of the biggest political campaign donors in order to keep politicians voting to keep food ingredient costs, and regulation, low. It's clear that neither the industry or government cares about the health of the nation, rather their concerns lay more with more money and getting elected. The acts of both parties should be exposed and should be seen as crimes against the public, but they are both the judge and jury of the issue. As Americans, the best option we have to improve the nation's health is to stop voting for crooked politicians, start voting for healthy foods at the market, and even more importantly, realize that it is not too late to change the system.
