Economic Classes and Obesity in America

I chose to do my research paper on the relationship between different social classes (upper, middle, lower) and obesity. I chose to write about this topic because after watching Food Inc. and the part where the mother from the low income family was explaining how although she’d like to buy better food for her family, they can’t afford it because of how expensive it is. As you may remember, her husband was kind of overweight and on medication but between the cost of his medicine and the cost of a healthy diet she had no choice but to buy the cheaper, unhealthy food. This got me thinking about other lower class families and how the high prices of healthy food may be affecting their health and diet. Then I thought about those who were apart of the upper class and how that might be affecting their diet and eating choices. And after that, I thought about those families, like mine, who aren’t struggling severely nor bathing in Benjamins.

So far, I haven’t had too much trouble with finding information. I’d say the “worst” part has just been finding the time (and the patience) to read through so much information. I need some visual research! Graphs, charts, list, -- any and all of that would be quite helpful right now. Sometimes I’ll be paragraphs in on an article or finish it and then realize there’s really no information in there that could be of any use to me. That gets annoying and discouraging real quick. It may be too early in the process, but sometimes I feel so ready to give up on this paper. Real talk. But then I remember that “contract” I signed and how I’m really not trying to fail this class so I push through and read some more.

Am I the only one who’s hit this point? Have any of you been lucky enough to come across any visual research?

If you happen to come across anything along the lines of charts, list, or graphs relating to my topic let a girl know.

  1. I have definitely hit this point. My paper is about the same topic and I got my idea from the same place as you and have been searching and searching coming up with nothing in regards to visuals. I have also read through several articles only till the end realizing that there's no real information to take or its just repeating information. Visual aides would be wonderful at this point.

    1. Glad to hear I'm not the only one! And, yes. Wonderful, indeed. Who knows, maybe it's just the topic we chose.

  2. I like how you got intrigued on this topic, because of Food Inc. This topic is a very good one if you know where to look. I am sure that there are many articles on how low-income families are struggling to afford good, healthy food. Unfortunately, this is very common in the world we live in.

Maybe there is some useful information here for you https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2847733/

Also, I empathize with you when you say that you don't have the time and patience to be reading tons of long articles.. It is frustrating when you read a 20 paragraph article only to realize that it doesn't help you at all. However, you should not give up, especially on this, because it WILL affect you strongly. Hang in there Miracle!
