Local Organic Food & Farming Can Help Revitalize the Economy

https://www.organicconsumers.org/news/local-organic-food-farming-can-help-revitalize-economy

This source provides a very informative insight on how our current food system came to be, how it ruins our economy, and what we can do about it. He explains that this industrial food system came to be because of WWII. There was a need for canned and microwavable foods as well as powdered drinks. They got items like these into the homes and began to grow and started offering even easier meal options. This unhealthy rise to power has depleted the traditional food industry and its contribution to communities and their economies. The author provides that we should get involved with "community gardens, food co-ops, Community-Supported Agriculture (CSA), farmers' markets, and seed savers groups keep money in the community." He also encourages organic food products, connections between local farms and schools, partnerships between farms and companies, and state programs to promote involvement in local farms.

This source would be helpful for those of you who are researching the take-over of the industrial food system. This helps more so with the solutions to the problem, not so much the problems becoming. I am researching the cause and effect as well as the cure to this problem.

  1. In my opinion I think that this source is important to help us realize that the food we purchase at our local supermarkets can be harmful to our well-being and what is necessary to fix the problem. With the rise of processed foods, big corporations are producing foods in massive amounts no matter how healthy or harmful they may be to increase their profits. The growth of these industries have shaped how consumers shop for food. Rather than buying the more expensive, healthy organic food, many people are drawn towards the less expensive item. As a result, there are more opportunities for people to be involved in local farming and providing more fresh produce to markets.

  2. I like this article because I am researching the same topic, and I do need some more good resources. The great thing about this article and many others is it raises more awareness for organic foods and the real truth behind them. I am interested to learn a log more about the topic and really dig deep into research.
