In my paper i’m looking for why obesity has affected the lower class in America so much more than in other countries. I’m hoping to find the real source of the problem to see if there is one area in society that can change to fix the problem, a ripple effect if you will. I got my idea for the question after watching the Food Inc. movie where the mother was saying she would like to buy healthier food for her children but could not afford it. Just about her whole family was overweight and you could see the stress on her face as well as sadness. This got me thinking that maybe there is one source that is causing all these problems. It seems to me that most of the problems are coming from food pricing. There seems to be a lot of information on the subject of why obesity has affected the lower class so much but is lacking in why it is affecting America so much more than other countries. This is the part of the research that is getting me. I’ve been searching for an answer to this part of the question and always seem to come up short. I’m not sure if i’m just not looking in the right places or if there really is none to little research done on this matter. Has anyone else had this problem? Am I the only one struggling to find this part of the research? Some help would be great.
The low class families have problems with obesity because fast food is very cheap. It is also very convenient because you can get it at any corner and it is made very quick. It would take longer to make a full meal and probably be more expensive. These lower class families just don't have to time to do all this so they just go out and buy fast food. We all know that fast food isn't good for you but you got to do what you got to do to feed your family. I think the answer to your question might be that America is just an unhealthy country. Other countries don't have as many fast food places as we do.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Kelvin that fast food is pretty cheap and most of those families seem to buy fast food instead of going to the store and not having enough for healthy goods. Fast food is addicting and bad for you which is why we try to cut down on it. I do also agree that America is an unhealthy country and that too needs to be improved. I do as well need an answer to this, I think I found some pretty good information about another person towards obesity in my research but that is about it. I wish I had the answer. ill do some more research.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what you are saying and I think it has a little to do with the fact that America is home to so many illegal immigrants from all over. They come here with nothing and try to get whatever job they can get their hands on just to get by in life. They will take whatever they can get and don't get paid very much which means they don't have extra money to be spending on healthy food and would rather settle for an unhealthy fast food meal that also fills them up better. On the other hand, there are also people that are from here who just simply don't have it as good as others and are just trying to survive. Think about it, if you only make so much a month and you have bills to pay, healthy food will probably be the last thing on your mind

ReplyDeleteI found this during my research on government contribution to unhealthy eating habits. It's a link to a CBS News article about how the government's pricing of healthy foods is making it seem like they want us to make unhealthy food choices. It may or may not be SUPER helpful, but maybe it'll help you out a little, at least.
