As processed food becomes more and more convenient to consumers' lives, there will be more consumption and dependency for these packaged items. Throughout the years, these foods have been conventional to our households since its rise after WWII making it easier to prepare meals as opposed to making something from scratch. Many families rely on processed foods because it's cheap and it's easier to make a meal with the ingredients already packaged. However, people often assume that the food that they purchase is always healthy, but it is shown that such foods can be contaminated from bacteria and chemicals that can cause illnesses like food poisoning. The author states that canned foods and other nonperishable items containing "chemicals are often used to extract the partial-food ingredients, and these compounds leave residues in foods," which can have damaging health consequences. There are hundreds of thousands of chemicals used in our foods, but we don't know about the possible effects it can have on our bodies.
There are many ways to avoid consuming processed foods, such as, buying fresh produce as a substitute and is the healthiest option. Perishable foods and vegetables as an alternative is not filled with as many contaminants as processed foods.

Processed foods do offer a quicker way of preparing a meal without sacrificing taste, but it sure does put many unknown "ingredients" into it.
ReplyDeleteI think that it's best to eat processed foods only if you don't have much time to make homemade food. But if you have plenty of free time and want a very tasty meal, it's best to prepare a homemade meal (or as your post says: "from scratch")
